Our courses are certified through the National Rifle Association and Municipal Police Education and Training Commission. We have a variety of pistol, rifle, gun safety, and range operation classes.

Our classes are offered by appointment and open to public enrollment. Classroom presentation is conducted in Shadyside and shooting is conducted at Trafford Sportsmen’s Club near Monroeville, PA and Tarentum District Sportsmen’s Club near Sarver, PA.

Pistol Courses

NRA FIRST Steps teaches the knowledge, skills, and attitude required for owning and using a rifle or pistol safely.

Course topics include:
1. Pistol/Rifle knowledge & safe gun handling.
2. Ammunition knowledge & the fundamentals of pistol/rifle shooting.
3. Shooting positions and shooting qualification.
4. Scoring targets and selecting and maintaining your pistol/rifle.

Must take Basic Pistol or First Steps Pistol before this course.

This course is a pre-requisite for NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home.

Teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.

Course Topics Include:
1. Carry, store and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside of the home.
2. Level 1: 225 rounds on the range learning different shooting techniques
3. Level 2: 125 rounds learning more advanced shooting techniques

*Students must bring their own firearm (9mm or .38 special minimum), sturdy belt, strong side hip holster, 2 magazines, 2 magazine holders,  pull over and jacket cover garments to this course, and 200 rounds of ammo.*

The NRA Defensive Pistol Course will focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset. The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and with confidence.

Course Topics Include:

  1. How to apply the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling When Carrying Concealed
  2. Basic Principles of Concealment and the Difference Between Cover and Concealment
  3. Drawing from the Holster
  4. Levels of Mental Awareness
  5. Developing the Proper Mindset When Using a Pistol for Personal Protection
  6. Clearing Common Stoppages
  7. Moving off the line of attack and shooting
  8. Shooting Qualification

It is recommended that students have taken NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home or are experienced shooters as this course is designed to review concealed carry concepts and reinforce already developed skills.

The Duty Handgun Course is MPOETC approved (CLE02086) and designed to push the limits of operator performance and enhance their overall proficiency, speed, and accuracy of first hit. This is achieved by discussing industry standards, direct coaching, and performing drills that review, refine, and reinforce operator concepts of positioning, efficiency of movement, and firearm manipulation while under duress. At the end of the course, operators will be able to apply the skills they learned to better protect themselves and those close to them.

Course topics include:

1. Discussion of handgun setup, storage, ballistics, and core concepts of use

2. Dry practice of loading considerations, level 1-2 malfunction clearance, and tactical loading

3. Ready/carry positions and timing to first shot

4. Positional shooting, utilizing cover, and shooting on the move

5. Combination of the introduced skills in lessons 4 and 5 with an emphasis on urgency

8. Multiple Threats and Decision Making

9. MPOETC Pistol Qualification

The Patrol Rifle course is MPOETC approved (CLE02079) and designed to push the limits of operator performance and enhance their overall proficiency, speed, and accuracy of first hit. This is achieved by discussing industry standards, direct coaching, and performing drills that review, refine, and reinforce operator concepts of positioning, efficiency of movement, and firearm manipulation while under duress. At the end of the course, operators will be able to apply the skills they learned to better protect themselves and those close to them.

Course topics include:

1. Discussion of rifle setup, storage, ballistics, and core concepts of use
2. Dry practice of loading considerations, level 1-4 malfunction clearance, and tactical loading

The Home Firearm Safety Course is a non-shooting course where students learn the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely handle and store firearms.

Course topics include:
1. Gun safety rules and ownership responsibility.
2. Demonstration of loading and unloading different pistol, rifle, and shotgun action types by the instructor.
3. Students practice the loading and unloading of those same firearms with the Instructor.
4. How ammunition works, identifying ammunition, proper storage of ammunition, and cleaning of firearms.

The NRA Range Safety Officer Course develops NRA Certified Range Safety Officers who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

The De-Escalation course is MPOETC approved and designed to reinforce the importance of de-escalation and highlight that de-escalation is enabled before, during, and after an incident in a variety of ways. This is achieved by discussing the importance of empowering individuals to make decisions for resolving conflict, identifying personality types, and practicing good communication and tactics. At the end of the course, students will be able to apply the skills they learned to better protect themselves, others, and those close to them.

4 Hours

$350 for up to 10 students

The ASP Certification Course is a dynamic, hands-on 7-hour training experience specifically designed for protection professionals, including executive protection agents, private security officers, and law enforcement personnel. The course is designed to acquaint participants with operational use of the ASP Tactical Baton, Tactical Restraints/Performance Flashlights and/or OC. The training includes basic portation (carrying) and presentation (drawing) techniques as well as defensive application procedures. Certification acknowledges that the individual officer met a competency-based standard of knowledge and performance with practical, court-defensible, and easily retainable techniques for real-world application.

Course Topics Include:

1. Mechanics and operation

2. Legal aspects of use

3. Threat assessment and situational awareness

4. Presentation techniques

5. Target zones

6. Dedicated drills using each system separately

7. Integrated drills utilizing all systems together

Anthony DeRubeis

Owner and Instructor

Anthony is passionate and driven to provide meaningful and relevant training to students of all skill levels because he found consistent, structured, training options to be lacking in Pittsburgh. After sitting through many classes that had a lot of unrelated information, repetitive stories, and understanding there is a need for more quality training options, Anthony decided to launch Special Tasks Group Training. STG strives to bring accessible, impactful, and focused training to students by creating the opportunity to help introduce people from all walks of life to a new experience.

Anthony is currently full-time with Special Tasks Group Training. Prior to his current position, Anthony worked for multiple security companies, most notably as a Lieutenant for a local federal facility and the Director of Security at local jeweler. Before Security, Anthony owned a landscaping business for fifteen years and was also the former Chief Operations Officer at Spare Change for 4 and a half years, helping musicians to raise over $30,000 for charities at their shows.

Outside of work, Anthony was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff where his interest in firearms instruction grew after graduating top of his academy class in 2021. He went on to become an NRA Basic Instructor with ratings in rifle, pistol, firearm safety, and range safety. In 2024, Anthony was eligible to become an NRA Training Counselor and after completing the development workshop as honor graduate, received an appointment to be one of the approximately 2300 Training Counselors in the nation.

Anthony expanded into Law Enforcement and Security training becoming an ACT 235 and MPOETC certified firearms as well as a De-Escalation, OC, Taser, Baton, Defensive Tactics, Use of Force, Handcuffing Instructor and has created multiple state certified curriculums for Law Enforcement Education. Anthony is also passionate about safety and emergency response so he pursued instructor ratings for AVERT, STOP THE BLEED, and First Aid/CPR/AED and is contracted by local companies, in multiple industries, to provide this training to their staff.

Fluent in French and having visited 48 countries, Anthony attended Point Park University where he majored in National Security Studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2018. During his time at university, he was also a Cadet Commander with the Civil Air Patrol, a Search and Rescue Ground Team Leader/Instructor, and an Army Reserve Officer Training Corp Cadet. Under the pen name Allan Durand, Anthony self-published a book titled Path of the Candidate: Engaging with the French Foreign Legion.
